Back from our ‪London Film Festival‬ hiatus, our loop returns with Erykah Badu at the top. The soulful diva has completely reworked one of Drake’s latest smashes, ‘Hotline Bling’. Her “(But You Caint Use My Phone Mix)” widely improves on an already excellent, Flash & The Pan sampling original, which a few weeks ago came also close to top our chart.

Highest entry of the week is Baltimore’s favourites Beach House with one of the standout tracks from their surprise new album, ‘Thank Your Lucky Stars’, their second in as many months. Also new, the latest tracks from Eleanor Friedberger; Deerhunter; Sophie; Majical Cloudz; Mark Kozelek; Tinashe; Hype Williams; Shackleton; Operator Music Band and a colaboration between classically trained maestros Ólafur Arnalds & Nils Frahm.

2009 MUSIC A-Z: E for Eternal Summers

The rise of pedal distortion- led pop-rock, from the garage revival of the Vivian Girls to the fuzz and rawness of Times New Viking, is currently one of the creative fronts in popular music. And the E of 2009 is likely to add some more wood to this fire with brand new names such an Eternal Summers. In the jaunty and tuneful side of indie rock, this boy-girl duo’s debut EP is quickly earning them a great deal of devotion around the blogosphere.

Other recent source of hipness is the influence of Afrobeat in today’s US leftfield bands and in 2009 will keep on expanding. One of its most visible examples, Extra Golden , the band that’s made of the merging between Kenyan Benga music and American rock their USP, got a new album “Thank You Very Quickly.”

The Academy has spoken, after the results of our annual music poll were unveiled, now it’s the turn for the official Rober Awards. There are few surprises and many similarities with the people’s choices. As predicted 2008 got a name standing above the rest: Portishead. The complete list of winners after the jump.

Hay pocas sorpresas y muchos de los galardones coinciden con los elegidos en la votación. Como ya se preveía en 2008 un nombre destacó muy por encima del resto: Portishead.
