Collectively nicknamed as Blog Rock, during this decade a big number of new artists discovered by the increasing presence of music blogs online, have grown to be a parallel world coexisting with the big-buck marketing of the four majors oligopoly, being a true engine for the industry’s renewal. Their influence was felt and in some cases intercepted, with some high profile ones closing down and some others watching their contents and ethos being modified. The remaining ones still fulfilled their gatekeeping role with clockwork precision and the following names were among their luckiest findings.
Apodados colectivamente como blog rock, durante esta decada un gran número de artistas noveles descubiertos por la creciente presencia de blogs musicales se han convertido en un mundo paralelo, coexistiendo con el ostentoso marketing del oligopolio de las cuatro grandes y consolidándose como un auténtico motor para la renovación de la industria. Su influencia se hacia notar y en algunos casos era interceptada, con algunos ejemplos notables cerrando sus puertas y otros viendo como sus contenidos y ética eran alterados. Los que quedaban siguieron cumpliendo su papel de filtro con precisión casi mecánica y los siguientes nombres se encontraron entre sus hallazgos más felices.

“Their best record for a decade” (sometimes stretched up to two) was one of the most repeated mottos by musical reviewers this year, showing the huge number of veteran glories, mostly from the nineties and the eighties, that polished their decaying careers once again, pushed in many cases by the live circuit’s good health and growing demand for established names. None of the following Academy’s heroes from the past gave their best shot in 2008, but at least they generated welcome signs of creative recovery.
“Su mejor disco en una década” (a veces se estiraba hasta dos) se ha convertido en una de las cantinelas más repetidas durante el año por la crítica musical para constatar la cantidad de veteranas glorias, mayormente de los noventa y ochenta, que volvían a dar lustre a sus decaídas carreras, motivados en muchos casos por el empuje que la buena salud de los circuitos del directo y su creciente demanda de músicos consagrados proporcionaba. Ninguno de los siguientes héroes del pasado de la Academia nos obsequió con su mejor esfuerzo, pero todos ofrecían señales inequívocas de recuperación creativa.

HARVEY MILK-A Maelstrom Of Bad Decisions
Hard sounds kept their unstoppable comeback. Since Mastodon performed first aid to the genre, metal and all its variations have been gathering new followers. Meanwhile, garage rock’s classic tradition, carried its global expansion like dynamite exploding from the American indie label In The Red ; and punks, next to other guitar distortion specialists, claimed their original strength reinstalled, after years of sponsored debilitation into the mainstream.
Los sonidos duros seguían su imparable proceso de vuelta. Desde que Mastodon le hiciera los primeros auxilios, el metal en sus múltiples vertientes sigue cosechando nuevos acólitos. Mientras tanto; el tradicional rock garajero desde el sello americano In The red se expandía como la pólvora por todo el mundo y los punks junto a otros especialistas en distorsión guitarrera volvían a reclamar su fuerza original, tras años de reblandecimiento esponsorizado.

There was not much joy in the electronica world during 2008, a year of consolidation of the emerging styles from former seasons. Dubstep reined supreme, next to DFA’s productions and flirts with Balearic house among trendsetters; whereas electro and all its derivatives dominated the dance floors.
La electrónica tampoco daba grandes alegrías en el 2008, siendo este un año de consolidación de los estilos emergentes en temporadas pasadas. El dubstep reinó supremo, junto a las producciones de DFA y los flirteos con el house Balear entre los creadores de tendencias; mientras las pistas de baile continuaban con el predominio del electro en todas sus variaciones.

Everything was quiet in Americana’s landscape. The world of the singer-songwriters didn’t offer many shocks either. Luckily the recent invasion of mediocre ones, aiming at the middle-aged market seems to have diminished. The majority of the ones we highlight are well established figures; next to a couple of recent arrivals equally interesting.
Todo tranquilo en la campiña Americana y el mundo de los cantautores tampoco dio grandes sobresaltos; afortunadamente la reciente invasión de ejemplos mediocres con un ojo en el mercado de la mediana edad parece haber menguado. La mayor parte de los que destacamos son genios y figuras bien reconocidas, con un par de recién llegados más que interesantes.

A look at world music’s usual suspects made us feel a bit queasy, due to the predominance of the genre’s old stereotypes, without any big discoveries on the road. However, widening the search to include those artist who combine their local elements with rock, dance and other popular styles; often criticized by the guardians of folklore’s true identity, the ones who launch raves at the sound of a kora; and pests each time a keyboard riff crosses their way; we found ourselves in a surprising trip from Argentinean electronica to Cambodian or Puerto-Rican garage-rock; with stopovers in the Caribbean dancehall; Scandinavian psycho-folk and the places where electro and Afro or Brazilian beats converge. Una ojeada a los sospechosos habituales de las “Músicas del mundo” nos hacía sentir un pequeño mareo por la proliferación de viejos estereotipos del genero, sin grandes descubrimientos de por medio. Sin embargo, ampliando miras para añadir a aquellos artistas que combinan elementos locales con rock, dance y otros estilos mas plebeyos; despreciados habitualmente por los guardianes de la autenticidad del folklore, aquellos que lanzan albricias al sonar de la kora, y echan pestes cuando una ráfaga de sintetizador se cruza en su camino; nos encontrábamos en un sorprendente viaje desde la electrónica argentina al garaje-rock camboyano o portorriqueño; haciendo escalas en el dancehall caribeño; el psycho-folk escandinavo y los sitios donde el electro y los ritmos afros o brasileños convergen. In the States R&B and hip-hop are still the pop and rock of our days, therefore they seem to be suffering from the same stagnation affecting those genres elsewhere. Particularly, the hip-hop world seems to be in short supply of fresh ideas. The following artists, at least, tried their best to offer some.
En los Estados Unidos, el R&B y el hip-pop son todavía el pop y el rock de nuestros días, y por tanto se ven afectados por la misma inmovilidad que aqueja a dichos géneros en el resto del globo. En particular, el mundo del hip-hop parece estar quedándose sin ideas frescas. Los siguientes artistas, al menos, intentaron ofrecerlas.

FLIGHT OF THE CONCHORDS-Faux Da Fa Fa
As mentioned in this review’s introduction, the prevailing flavor of most records released this year, no matter what genre, was one of unfulfilled promise. That does not mean the year was short of good efforts; on the contrary, it was packed with them, but it truly lacked of great ones. According to this, we’ve reduced our traditional Top 100 to half its size. But beforehand, we would also like to present a new and overcrowded “Honorary Mentions” section, divided by styles and acknowledging the 101 records that didn’t quite reached the required stature to count among our favorites; beginning with the ones that invaded our hit parades.
Shameless pseudo-alternative bands; reality TV idols and all sorts of cute-looking, plastic puppets on a string populated the charts; widening the gap between the mainstream and the musical areas where creativity and challenge were still existing. A small number of, in some cases arguable, exceptions are worth mentioning.
Como ya mencionamos en la introducción de este repaso, el sabor predominante en muchos discos publicados este año, es el de promesa incumplida. Esto no significa que el año se quedase corto de trabajos dignos; por el contrario, estuvo cargado de ellos. Sin embargo, los realmente excelentes brillaron por su ausencia; consecuentemente, hemos encogido a mitad de tamaño nuestro tradicional Top 100. Como aperitivo, nos gustaría también hacernos eco de 101 álbumes que no estuvieron a la altura necesaria para contar entre nuestros favoritos, en una nueva y sobrecargada sección de “Menciones Honoríficas.” comenzando por aquellos que invadieron nuestras listas de éxitos.
Desvergonzadas bandas pseudo-alternativas; Ídolos de reality TV y títeres varios con buena fachada poblaron los charts; aumentando la distancia existente entre los medios convencionales y las áreas musicales en las que la creatividad y el riesgo aún existen. Las siguientes, y en algunos casos debatibles, excepciones fuero dignas de mención.

The quality of a year of music can be equally measured in triumphs or in disappointments. This year the latter were aplenty: Shameful comebacks; Rushed first albums to be released before the buzz expires; those ubiquitous not-that-good sophomore efforts; Vanity projects; Over hyped blog darlings… Welcome to 2008’s hall of shame and no, “Chinese Democracy” is not included. Life’s too short.
La calidad de un año de música puede medirse tanto en triunfos como en decepciones. Las segundas proliferaron como setas: vueltas innecesarias; debuts grabados con prisa para no perder el momento de fama temporal; esos ubicuitos, no tan buenos segundos trabajos; proyectos de vanidad; artistas sobrevalorados por los blogs…Bienvenido al desfile de la vergüenza del 2008…y no, no incluye “Chinese Democracy”. La vida es demasiado corta.

2008 won’t go into the history books as a good year for popular culture. A global financial crisis, threatening the survival of a big chunk of the music business, has joined the ongoing one suffered by an industry whose current model has reached its expiry date, with spectacularly diminishing year to year sales of physical product, not yet balanced by the growth of the digital sector.

El 2008 no pasará a la historia como un buen año para la cultura del pop. A la crisis que una industria cuyo modelo ha caducado lleva acarreando desde el cambio de siglo, y que año tras año viene diezmando las ventas de producto físico sin que la ascensión del producto digital cubra la diferencia; se ha unido otra mayor, económica y a escala global que amenaza con devastar una buena parte del negocio musical tradicional.
A week Of GIG PICS: Soulwax; Kelley Polar; Junior Boys; Metronomy; RZA and Dan Le Sac Vs. Scroobius Pip.
Recently two major events stood up among the hundred of gigs taking place every week in London: First of them, this year’s edition of The Ether festival, dedicated to music combined with multiple art disciplines, particularly technology and visuals. This year’s program saw Baby Dee collaborating with Current 93; Goldfrapp; Harmonia; Pere Ubu next to animators Brothers Quay, and superstar DJ’s Soulwax.
The second was a week full of cutting edge indie and electronica acts organized by promoter Eat Your Own Ears at the 02 Indigo, smaller venue than the arena, based at the former Millenium Dome. The Indigo, normally home to more established old glories, was given a facelift with the likes of Four Tet, Junior Boys, the Kompact label and RZA, all part of the impressibe line-up.
