Hip-hop kept on losing almost everything that made it an essential genre during the last twenty years of the XXth century; its social and political messages being progressively replaced by product placement lyrics wrapped in auto-tune and gangsta clichés. The noughties saw Jay-Z’s rise as the industry biggest mogul; a white rapper sponsored by Dr. Dre becoming the biggest male star in the world and the genre’s MCs and beatmasters being borrowed by stars from all fields in order to update their style and make it appealing to the younger crowds. UK Grime, Missy, KanYe and some The Wu-Tang Clan members helped kept the genre vibrant, while some lesser known street warriors preserved its original spirit.

Las pistas de baile sufrieron la Resaca de los días dorados de revolución house y electrónica y comenzaron a mirar al pasado. Daft Punk fueron los reyes y una corte francesa de aspirantes a su trono se benefició de esta situación. DFA revistaba el sonido disco, mezclándolo inteligentemente con otros géneros, antiguamente antagónicos. La fiebre del mash-up constituyo el mas sonoro boom de la primera mitad, favoreciendo el ascenso de DJs como Freelance Hellraiser o Soulwax a los altos rangos de la industria. Finalmente, el house minimal (Villalobos) y el dubstep fueron los mas destacados frentes de creatividad e innovación en el genero.

The Dance floors suffered a hangover from their glory days of groundbreaking house and electronica and began looking backwards instead. Daft Punk were kings and a French court of pretenders to their throne benefited from it. DFA revisited disco, cleverly mixing it with other –formerly antagonistic- genres. The mash-up mania was the boom of the first half, propelling the rise of DJs like Soulwax and Freelance Hellraiser to the upper echelons of the industry. Finally, minimal house (Villalobos) and dubstep were among the few beacons of creativity and forward-thinking on this field.
Everyone else was diving in the electro-infused techno pop of the eighties, which has finally reached saturation point. More recently the retro streak jumped to the next decade, looking at trashy nineties eurodance instead. Ten memorable floor fillers after the jump:

Before the contestants of Pop Idol and its many franchises massacred the charts, annoying even good ol’ sting in the process; three child stars from the Disney Club (Britney, Cristina & Justin) had grown up, made alliances with the best producers of the moment and set the standard sky-high for super-slick dance-pop music that many other artists went to follow. Timbaland turned from hip-hop mogul to pop hit factory and in the UK production teams such as Xenomania delivered some of the best tunes we’ve heard in all this period. Also in Britain Damon Albarn and Danger Mouse created the first virtual band to great acclaim. Ten perfect examples of pure contemporary pop after the jump.

R&B enjoyed an incredible commercial expansion, conquering the place pop music used to occupy in past times. But, despite this hegemony and the fact that most of the more memorable songs of the last ten years come from the genre, few urban albums will be remembered as classics. The dependency on star producers in search of the catchy beat; the following of established formulas for easy success and the proliferation of young heartthrobs and she-model vocalists made nearly impossible to find real soul in contemporary black music. The influence of Radiohead as the most prestigious band in the planet ended up with a sanitized version –Coldplay- as the best selling Brit artist; their success spawned even safer followers (Keane, Snow Patrol, etc.,) of very reduced musical interest.
