R&B enjoyed an incredible commercial expansion, conquering the place pop music used to occupy in past times. But, despite this hegemony and the fact that most of the more memorable songs of the last ten years come from the genre, few urban albums will be remembered as classics. The dependency on star producers in search of the catchy beat; the following of established formulas for easy success and the proliferation of young heartthrobs and she-model vocalists made nearly impossible to find real soul in contemporary black music.
