Rober Awards 2017 Music Poll: Complete List Of Winners

Kendrick Lamar and LCD Soundsystem are the biggest winners at this year’s Rober Awards. The rapper from Compton, recently shunned out of the biggest categories at the Grammys, was voted best male and hip-hop artist of the year, and his record DAMN. took home the honours for album of the year. James Murphy’s band unsurprisingly won in the category of comeback of the year, as well as being voted the best band and song of the year for the title track of their fourth album American Dream.

Among biggest surprises St. Vincent was voted best female artist over Lorde, the young Kiwi singer though reigned in the pop artist category. Radiohead‘s ‘OK Computer’ took over Prince‘s ‘Purple Rain,’which had been the frontrunner during the last few weeks, and Japanese veteran Ryuichi Sakamoto earned the award for best electronica. Cigarettes After Sex were voted breakthrough artists and Cardi B won the Sound Of 2018 trophy.

Frank Ocean, Father John Misty and The Black Madonna were among the rest of the winners in a scandal-stricken edition hampered by complaints of individual voting manipulation in the Best Live Category which were proved right. In the wake of which, the Academy decided the prize should be shared to honour the hundreds of fans of both Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers paying tribute to the late legend, and Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds who genuinely voted and would have left in any case the rest of the contenders far behind.

#BestOf2015 : Top 50 Albums Of The Year

TOP 50 ALBUMS

Here they are! Our favourite records of 2016. There has been something for everyone. Veteran artists such as Sleater-Kinney; D’Angelo; Jim O’Rourke or Dr. Dre putting an end to their long career breaks. Younger ones (Grimes; Tame Impala; Julia Holter) hitting their all-time best. Some others -Sufjan Stevens and Björk, among them-went to exorcise intimate ghosts and the results are among their most accomplished works.

There were band members going solo (Father John Misty; Jamie XX) and mind-blowing collaborations (FFS; Jonny Greenwood’s Junun). Rober awards favourites returning in top shape (Joanna Newsom; Destroyer; Panda Bear) and a healthy crop of first albums from all genres (Courtney Barnett; Natalie Prass; Vince Staples; Beach Slang) keeping things fresh. Finely crafted escapism (Carly Rae Jepsen), next to soundtracks to our conflicting society (Kendrick Lamar; Sleaford Mods). Altogether they have helped shaping this as the best year in music for, at least, a decade. Check them out and enjoy!

All Hail King Kendrick Lamar

KENDRICK LAMAR

As a sign of things to come, Kendrick Lamar stormed straight into our loop’s #1 taking over Kanye West with ‘King Kunta’, a P-funk infused highlight from his winning new album, currently doing the same in every chart across the globe. Kendrick has deliver a politically charged, musically astonishing work with ‘To Pimp A Butterfly’, the best album we have heard since his former classic ‘Good Kid, M.A.A.d City’ and one that establishes the Compton rapper as the best hip-hop artist in the planet. Kanye is going to need a truly ace new record to be able to match Lamar’s indisputable brilliance.

Apart from ‘King Kunta’, Django Django lead the new entries contingent, which also features the latest tracks by Blur; Jill Scott; Sheer Mag; Grimes & Bleachers; Nils Frahm and a catchy new single by Chilean alt pop star Gepe, joining forces with former Peruvian novelty act,Wendy Sulca who seems to be leaving behind her little countryside girl tacky antics and having a go at artist respectability.

Big Sean & Friends Control The Loop

big sean

‘Control (HOF)’, the collaboration between Big Sean, Jay Electronica & Kendrick Lamar has proven to be a winner, despite copywright reasons preventing it to appear in Sean’s new album. Lamar’s inflamed verse asking all current big players in hip-hop to better their game fuelled an online chain reaction and promped the song all the way up to the top of our loop.

Another hip-hop high profile collaboration, Earl Sweatshirt Feat. Frank Ocean, is the week’s highest debut. Other strong entries are the latest offerings by Poliça; Parquet Courts; Anna Calvi and the ballad that brings together the soulful talents of Janelle Monáe and Miguel .
