Rober Awards

Yeasayer played at the ICA, saluted by their frontman, Chris Keating, as a legendary place where many important band had started their careers. Backed by multiracial TV on the radio protégées Dragons of Zynth . They appear as a solid group of musicians, clarifying the influences behind their debut “All Hour Cymbals” sonic melting pot: pop-psychedelia; Croshby Stills & Nash vocal harmonies; some global rhythms -they ended their set with an orgiastic take on “Sunrise” for which the whole of Dragons of Zynth joined them onstage-; etc.

A good gig, partially shadowed by the tendency towards frightening rock-star manierisms displayed by Keating, whose vocal excesses somehow ruined the rendition of their fantastic single “2080”. Highlights of the night were the already mentioned “Sunrise” and new single “Wait for the summer” (See new video for its new remixed single edit above)

VAMPIRE WEEKEND FIRE ALERT

Vampire Weekend became last night a step closer to conquer the Rober Awards for most promising new artist, after an incendiary performance at London’s ULU. The preppie four-piece band from Manhattan, whose musical style has been described as a cross between early Talking heads and Paul Simon’s “Graceland”, were in the middle of a triumphant show, playing the closing track of their magnificent debut album “The Kids Don’t Stand A Chance” where a certain smell of burn, followed by a Smoke alarm abruptly stopped their performance. Promptly, the building had to be evacuated and the Fire Brigade came to check the place was safe.

Named after a character created by Pedro Almodovar for his shockingly funny early efforts in pop music as part of the duo “Almodovar & MacNamara” and later used in the acclaimed director’s second feature film “Labyrinth of Passions”; Roberawards gets into his best charity shop outfit to premiere a new section, dedicated to everything that’s free; gratis; for-no-money-whatsoever available on the net.

With tough financial prospects for 2008, we though we should play a stronger social role as community benefactors, helping our readers to save a few pounds by pointing them towards the finest free entertainment.
