This has been a vintage year for Original screenplays, the quality and quantity of which has been so high than best picture nominated works such as ‘Stranger By The Lake’ or ‘Ida’, as well as such acclaimed ones as the Dardenne’s Two Days One Night or J.C. Chandor’s ‘A Most Violent Year’ had to be left out of our selection.
The seven nominated screenplays were A. Dinelaris, N. Giacobone, A. G. Iñárritu, A. Bo for ‘Birdman’, the story of an actor trying to regain with a theater play the prestige and confidence years of playing superhero sequels had taken away from him; Richard Linklater’s piece of cinematic history as much as a slice of life,’Boyhood’, filming through twelve years the growth of a child from kid to adult; E. Max Frye & Dan Futterman’s chilling and measured work in ‘Foxcatcher’, based in the real story of the billionaire who killed one of the wrestling athletes whose Olympic team he sponsored; Andrey Zvyagintsev & Oleg Negin’s superb epic tale of honest man versus corrupt state in ‘Leviathan’; Mike Leig’s extraordinary research on the life and work of the master ‘Mr. Turner’; Dan Gilroy’s creepy look at Today’s broadcast news appetite for sensation in ‘Nightcrawler’ and Wes Anderson & Hugo Guiness’ intricate, Russian dolls-like structured comedy ‘The Grand Budapest Hotel’.
