#FilmNominations2014 : Best Production Design

Another traditionally contested category, our shortlist for best production design features James Chindlund’s unbelievable realism showing the epic battle between humans and apes in ‘Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes’; David Crank’s recreating the seventies when the end of the hippy golden era gave way to a more conservative and troubled America in ‘Inherent Vice’ in which the Californian seaside way of life meets Shady corporation buildings; sleazy parlours and millionaires’ houses; Nathan Crowley’s impeccably crafted post-apocalyptic earth and space travels of ‘Interstellar’.

Also nominated are Suzie Davis’ thorough research on the life of “Mr. Turner”, recreating his studio, the pension he visited in Margate; the Royal Academy; the society of his era, and the places he visited for his studies about light; Mark Friedberg’s sober but impeccable revisiting of Martin Luther King’s era and the town where his history shaping marches for equality took place in ‘Selma’; Adam Stockhausen’s extraordinarily stylized ‘The Grand Budapest Hotel’, reminiscent of retro comic stories and lavish art deco architecture of early XX century and William Chang Suk Ping & Alfred Yau Wai Ming extraordinary attention to detail in Wong Kar-Wai martial arts drama ‘The Grandmaster’, his most expensive production to date.
