La Película Del Mes: La Noche Más Oscura ★★★★★

En plena locura de Oscars, los honores por película de la semana y del mes recaen esta vez en la más controvertida de las nominadas de éste año, ‘La Noche Más Oscura’. Kathry Bigelow se ha alzado con cinco nominaciones a los premios de la Academia y otras tantas en los Rober con ésta densa y espectacular narración de un pasaje de la historia reciente que esta aún en mente de todos, la búsqueda y asesinato de Osama Bin Laden.

Bigelow sucede a la ya ganadora del Oscar ‘En Tierra Hostil’ con la que podría ser considerada una compañera gemela, manteniendo el mismo estilo de dirección, una fotografía eleganteme y sin adornos y el centrarse en la historia que se cuenta, gracias a un brillante guión escrito por su colaborador habitual Mark Boal. ‘La Noche Más Oscura’ hereda todos los méritos de su predecesora y los lleva a nuevas alturas, añadiendo un ritmo más rápido, una exhaustiva investigación y el bono extra de llevarnos hasta el corazón de unos eventos tan importantes como poco conocidos en su detalle.

Film Of The Month: Zero Dark Thirty ★★★★★

In the midst of the Oscar madness, the film and month of the week honours go this week to the most controversial among this year’s crop of nominees, ‘Zero Dark Thirty’. Kathryn Bigelow has scooped five nominations for the Academy awards and another five for the Robers with this dense and gripping account of a passage of recent story that’s still on everybody’s mind, the search and killing of Osama Bin Laden.

Bigelow’s follows-up her Oscar winner ‘The Hurt Locker’ with what could easily be regarded as its twin companion. It maintains the same directorial style, unadorned but slick cinematography and a focus on the storytelling thanks to a brilliant screenplay written by her regular collaborator Mark Boal. ‘Zero Dark Thirty’ inherits all the merits of its predecessor and takes them to new highs, adding a far more rapid pace; thorough research and the bonus interest of delving into those still little known era defining events.

Lamar; Ocean; Grimes & Apple Winners Of The Robers 2012

Our 2012 Music Poll has come to an end with Kendrick Lamar being the biggest winner. The rapper from Compton was the most voted artist in three categories: album, song and hip-hop artist of the year. Following closely, Frank Ocean beat Lamar for best male artist, earning best R&B artist as well. Other multiple winners are Canadian alt-pop star Grimes; US songwriter Fiona Apple and Swedish psychedelic purveyors Goat. The veteran band Swans, celebrating their 30th anniversary, were voted group of the year.

Other favourites were less fortunate in the polls; Julia Holter; Chromatics; Django Django and Beach House weren’t left empty handed,though, winning some of the official awards handed by the Academy.

Nuesta encuestra para elegir los premios Rober llegó a sun fin y dejó a Kendrick Lamar como gran ganador. El rapero de Compton fué el artista mas votado en tres categorías: album; canción y artista hip-hop del año. Siguiéndole de cerca, Frank Ocean venció a Lamar como mejor artista masculino, haciéndose también con el mejor R&B/Soul. Otros múltiples ganadores son la estrella del pop alternativa canadiense Grimes; la cantautora Americana Fiona Apple y los nuevos exponentes de la psicodélia sueca, Goat.La veterana banda Swans, celebrando éste año su 30 aniversario, fueron votados como grupo del año.

Favoritos de partida como Julia Holter; Chromatics; Beach House o Django Django tuvieron menos fortuna en la encuesta, sin embargo no se van con las manos vacías, habiendo ganado alguno de los premios oficiales seleccionados por la Academia.

Amour; Motors & Beasts Lead Nominations For 2012 Film Rober Awards

The 2012 Rober Awards Film Poll is now open. ‘Amour’, Michael Haneke’s painfully real drama about an elderly couple coping with degenerative illness; Leos Carax’s visionary hommage to cinema in ‘Holy Motors’ and first timer Behn Zeitlin’s poetic tale of a Katrina-like catastrophe narrated from the point of view of a five year old kid, ‘Beasts Of The Southern Wild’, head the nominations list with eight apiece.

On a superb year for movies, the rest of contenders for best picture are The Master; Django Unchained; Zero Dark Thirty; Tabú; No; Once Upon A Time In Anatolia and Argo. Whereas Silver Linings Playbook; Life Of Pi; Berberian Sound Studio; Moonrise Kingdom; Barbara; Rust and Bone; etc. are also among the works earning multiple nominations.

Amor, Motores y Bestias Copan Las Nominaciones A Los Rober De Cine.

La encuesta para elegir los Premios Rober De Cine 2012 ya está abierta al voto. ‘Amor’, el dolorosamente realista drama sobre una pareja de ancianos enfrentandose a una enfermedad degenerativa dirigido por Michael Haneke; el visionario homenaje que Leos Carax le dedica al cine con ‘Holy Motors’ y el poético debut de Behn Zeitlin, narrando una catastrophe similar a la del huracán Katrina desde el prisma de una niña de cinco años, ‘Bestias del sur salvaje”, lideran la lista de nominaciones con ocho cada una.

En un increíble año para el séptimo arte, el resto de aspirantes a mejor película son The Master; Django Desencadenado; La Noche Más Oscura; Tabú; No; Erase Una Vez En Anatolia y Argo. Yo La Tengo Back To Their Best With “Ohm”

In what already looks like a vintage year for musical comebacks with Bowie; Blur; Pulp; Suede; Fleetwood Mac and My Bloody Valentine already announcing live tours or studio albums, Hoboken’s finest Yo La Tengo are the early returning birds. The veteran trio delivers one of the first great albums of 2013 showing their poppier side in ‘Fade’. Their second single ‘Ohm’ tops the current edition of our loop.

Carry on with this jam-packed month of January; the new entries keep on coming. Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds; Pere Ubu; Todd Terje & Lindstrøm are back too. As well as Rober Awards contenders, Laura Mvula or Grimes, who’s just released a brand new Four Tet remix of’Skin’, one of her album’s standout moments.

El lo que va pareciendo un año antológico para los retornos musicales, con Bowie; Blur; Pulp; Suede; Fleetwood Mac y My Bloody Valentine anunciando giras o nuevos trabajos, el trio de Hoboken Yo La Tengo son los que han llegado mas temprano. La veteran banda nos entrega uno de los primeros discos de altura del 2013, mostrándonos su lado mas pop en ‘Fade’. Su Segundo single ‘Ohm’ encabeza la nueva edición del loop.

Y siguiendo con este apelotonado mes de enero, las novedades se nos siguen apilando. Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds; Pere Ubu; Todd Terje & Lindstrøm también están de vuelta. La Película De La Semana: Django Desencadenado ★★★★★

Tras nuestro largo paréntesis vacacional, retomamos nuestro repaso a la cartelera londinense a lo grande. Nuestra película de la semana significa la vuelta en plena forma de Quentin Tarantino, de nuevo dirigiéndose a la yugular del pulp y resucitando el género del Spaghetti Western. Situado en los tiempos de la esclavitud, quizás el periodo más vergonzoso de la historia americana, Tarantino nos entrega un excelente trabajo, su mejor desde ‘Jackie Brown’, ya aclamado por muchos como una nueva obra maestra en la trayectoria de uno de los más vitales directores de nuestro tiempo.

‘Django Desencadenado’ comparte territorio con ‘Malditos Bastardos’, ambas expandiendo los elementos característico que han convertido a Tarantino en un referente cultural de enorme influencia (Su peculiar sentido del humor; un collage variopinto de influencias sacadas de la cultura popular; violencia de comic; bandas sonoras cuidadosamente seleccionadas de un amplio catálogo de fuentes) mediante la adopción de diferentes géneros cinematográficos junto a poderosas declaraciones de principios contra dos de los más devastadores episodios en la historia de la humanidad; la Alemania nazi en Bastardos y la esclavitud en los estados del sur en Django. Pero allí donde la irregular obra bélica se quedaba sin alcanzar sus grandes ambiciones, Django lo consigue ampliamente e incluso las supera.

Film Of The Week: Django Unchained ★★★★★

Back from a long seasonal hiatus we resume our film review section in style. Our film of the week means the return to form of Quentin Tarantino, straight back to the heart of pulp by taking the Spaghetti Western genre by storm. Setting it during the times of slavery, the most shameful era in US history, Tarantino has delivered a spectacularly good film, his best since Jackie Brown, already touted by many as another masterpiece from one of the most essential contemporary directors.

Django Unchained shares a similar territory with Inglorious Basterds, both expanding the trademark elements that made of Tarantino such an influential cultural reference (His peculiar sense of humour; a collage of popular culture influences; comic-like violence; pick- and-mix soundtrack expertly selected from a broad range of sources) by taking over different film genres and boasting powerful statements against two of the most devastating chapters in the story of the world, the Nazi Germany in Basterds and slavery in the South of the States in Django. But wherever the irregular Inglorious Basterds was short of fulfilling its grand ambitions, Django Unchained achieves and even exceeds them.
