Our next category belongs to those who have taken their time to release a new record with results having been all the better for it. The nominees for best comeback of 2012 are: veteran British songwriter Bill Fay gave us his fourth album on a 45-year career; soul legend Bobby Womack, after last year’s collaboration with Damon Albarn’s superproject Gorillaz, recruited the Blur-meister himself to produce his long awaited return; alternative songstress Fiona Apple offering what’s been regarded by many as her most accomplished work to date; Canadian activist combo Godspeed You! Black Emperor bringing back their apocalyptic sounds to soundtrack our troubled times; their fellow Canadian legend Leonard Cohen gave us his excellent 12th studio album after his rapturously received live world tour and Britpop’s finest Saint Etienne delivering another superb collection of well-crafted pop songs as if time had not passed since their chart days.
