#31-JAVIERA MENA-Mena (Unión Del Sur)

Latinamerican pop has had a booming year with artists coming from all corners of the Spanish speaking continent full of propositions that often merged local tradition with hip Anglo-Saxon trends to astonishing results. Chilean chanteuse Javiera Mena confidently embraced the classic vocal influences of Karen Carpenter or Carole King; mixing it with the indie sounds of C86; the dancefloor oriented production of Pet Shop Boys or eurodance and a hint of old-fashioned popular Hispanic Diva crafting some of the best pop tunes heard anywhere in the planet over the last twelve months. Collaborations with Jens Lekman or Kelley Polar added international appeal to Javiera´s fine collection.

Javiera Mena Shines With ‘Moon Stone Light’

javiera mena

Our loop got a distinctive Latin flavour this week as Chilean pop star Javiera Mena reaches peak position with ‘Luz De Piedra De Luna’, our favourite track from her second solo album ‘Mena’. Meanwhile, Spanish artist El Guincho is also riding high with his ‘Pop Negro.’

A landslide of new entries has hit the loop during the last seven days, featuring new sounds by Nick Cave’s side project Grinderman; Deerhunter; Sufjan Stevens previewing his new album; Owen Pallett’s brand new EP; Mark McGuire of Emeralds; Big Boi Feat. Yelawolf; TV on The Radio Dave Sitek’s new project Maximum Balloon and, erm, teen star Justin Bieber in strange partnership with hip-hop greats KanYe West & Raekwon.

You can check the loop in full here.

An extended selection of our current favourite tracks can also be heard @ our hype machine page.
