The Cheapskate: The Greatest Summer 2010 DIY Mixtape (SIDE 1)

The Cheapskate has been on summer leave and on returning we’ve found so much quality free material piled up, that we are doing a ‘Summer wrap-up special’ to compile it all; Beginning with the free tracks that have been made available during all this months.

To include them all, we have created our own improvised DIY double mixtape. We’ll provide a suggested tracklist and links to all songs in four different posts –one per side-, and all you have to do is download and add them in your collection.

BOYFRIEND (Download)

The LA trio who’s brought back to trend the classy Phil Spector’s girl band productions with melodies wrapped in a bit of California Sun. Their debut album has been our indisputable record of the summer.

2-BEST COAST, ROSTAM & KID CUDI
ALL SUMMER (Download)

Converse’s exclusive annual series, in which the shoemakers sponsor a collaboration between some of the hippest artist of the moment, count this year with Best Coast, Rostam from Vampire Weekend and rapper Kid Cudi, in a truly summery number.

3-STILL CORNERS
ENDLESS SUMMER (Download)

London shoegazers mixing all the right elements, from Hope Sandoval/Beach House-esque vocals; to ethereal sonic landscapes that could fit in a David Lynch film soundtrack. ‘Endless Summer’ also had a distinctive sixties French pop melody.

‘Hey Boy’ was the presentation card from this megatwee combo from Memphis about to release their awaited debut album name after their city.

6-WAVVES
KING OF THE BEACH (Download)

After last years festival circuit tensions, Wavves return with a full triump, revisiting surf as their masters Jesus & Mary Chain once did, and releasing their second album; one of the winners of this summer season.

7- CLOUD NOTHINGS
DIDN’T YOU (Download)

More and more artists these days are removing the uncool tag off the overexploited grunge sounds of the nineties. Cleveland’s Dylan Baldi under his Cloud Nothings moniker is one of them. ‘Didn’t You’ is his latest offering.

8- NO AGE
GLITTER (Download)

The former skater punks from LA who began drinking in the fuzz of the British c86 got their second Sub Pop álbum ready. ‘Glitter’ is the first taster.

9-THE WRENS
CRESCENT (DEMO) (Download)

The return of the greatest unknown Americana band of the moment is a demo of one of their next album tracks, included on a New Orleans benefit compilation.

10- GRINDERMAN
HEATHEN CHILD (Download)

The Bad Seeds reduced version keep on going through unexpected ways in their second instalment. Prog, drone and psychedelic sounds abound.

11- SALEM
KING KNIGHT (Download)

Industrial shoegazers Salem and their sleazy soundtracks for urban decay are finally taking the shape of a full length. This is the title track.
