Best Of 2009: Honorary Mentions-In The Charts

10-ARCTIC MONKEYS-Humbug (Domino)

The charts kept on being invaded by shameless sub-products. Black Eyed Peas and Lady Gaga reigned supreme next to the latest batch of Talent TV winners; ropey R&B mongers and AOR of the worst kind, with very few saving graces: Electropop (Empire of the Sun; Royksopp) was still the recurrent sound for those who ventured searching for success. In the UK, once again, a new wave of female singers (La Roux; Florence & the Machine), joined the growing number of established ones (Lily Allen; Bat for Lashes), prompting many generalizations about the “Year of the Women in Pop”. In the US the influence of MGMT could be felt in bands such as Passion Pit or Lemonade. The surprising –for its diversity rather than actual quality- solo debut of The Strokes lead singer and Annie’s troubled follow-up to “Anniemal”, which finally saw the light of day after a series of misunderstandings with her brand new major label got the singer her freedom back; both managed to rise above the majority of their competitors.
