Oscars Race: Precursors & Nominations

american hustle

We return to the monitoring of this year’s exciting awards season, a few days after the Oscar nominations announcement made the race officially turn into the Oscars race. Much has changed since before christmas and what looked like a battle between “12 Years A Slave” and “Gravity” is now, after BAFTAS & Globes showed their love, a clear three-way race with “American Hustle” added into the equation.

Since the NY film critics championed it, David O’Russell’s seventies-set comedy caper has been piling up the honours, concluding in a tie with “Gravity” for the most number of Oscar nominations this year; both earned 10, one more than the slavery drama.

In the meantime, we have been listing every nomination, critic choice, guild award and other honours as they’ve happened, giving 5 points for each best picture win, 3 for each win in other categories and 1 per nomination or mention.

A total of 315 pictures, including a record number of 76 foreign language submissions received some sort of mention through the season. Check the Top 40 most awarded ones so far and the full list here

DF-02238.CR21-12 YEARS A SLAVE ★★★★½
Steve McQueen (691 points/9 Oscar noms)
Even if it’s shocking depiction of violence and abuse may come in the way of old-fashioned voters' support and despite ‘Gravity’ and ‘American Hustle’ earning one nomination more for the AMPAS, McQueen’s slavery drama is still the one to beat as the number of wins all across the board with critics, guilds and precursors clearly shows.
GRAVITY
2-GRAVITY ★★★★★
Alfonso Cuarón (380 points/10 Oscar noms)
Already considered a game changer, the film 3D and IMAX were invented for won the Globe for best director and seems likely to repeat the achievement at the Oscars, a technical sweep is also on the cards.
american hustle3-AMERICAN HUSTLE ★★★½
David O'Russell (300 points/10 Oscar noms)
O’Russell repeats his stellar casting formula and gets huge support for four of the film’s five stars, the main appeal of this as funny as convoluted comedy caper, loosely based on the real story of caught fraudsters helping the FBI to capture some bigger fish. With most of the season’s talk focused on Gravity vs. Slaves, many see this crowd-pleaser rising among them and stealing the best film statue.
her4-HER ★★★★★
Spike Jonze (269 points/5 Oscar noms)
Another critics’ favourite, this brilliant, near future romantic comedy raises important questions about our relationship with technology through the romance between a divorced writer and his operative system. The voice of Scarlet Johansson steals the show, but its biggest award magnets are Jonze’s terrific screenplay and Arcade Fire’s fine soundtrack.
dallas5-DALLAS BUYERS CLUB ★★★★
Jean-Marc Vallée (206 points/6 Oscar noms)
Loved by the Actors guild and with best screenplay and picture Oscar nods under its arm, the strength of Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto’s performances, which has made them the frontrunners in both male acting categories, has taken this drama set during the origins of the AIDS pandemic beyond the most optimistic expectations.
Inside Llewyn Davis6-INSIDE LLEWYN DAVIS ★★★★½ (183 points/2 Oscar noms)
Coen Brothers
The Coens offbeat portrait of Greenwich Village’s 60’s bohemian folk scene has earned the famous siblings a big deal of critical acclaim. That’s why a meagre two Oscar nominations, snubbing its fine screenplay and Oscar Isaac’s breakthrough performance, feel like a let- down for the film’s legion of fans.
blue jasmine7-BLUE JASMINE ★★★★★ (161 points/3 Oscar noms)
Woody Allen
Woody’s best film didn’t make it into the best picture shortlist probably due to the year’s huge overcrowding but Cate Blanchett’ looks like the safest bet in the actress race. Sally Hawkins has also finally found her Academy reward and Allen himself, recipient of the honorary Cecil B. De Mille award at the Globes adds another nomination for his legendary writing skills.
NEBRASKA8-NEBRASKA ★★★★
Alexander Payne (157 points/6 Oscar noms)
Another film exceeding award expectations, this minor, heartfelt piece of Americana somehow resembling a younger brother of David Lynch’s “The Straight Story” , confirms its director as one of Today’s industry’s darlings. Veterans Bruce Dern; June Squibb and a funny, bittersweet screenplay are its biggest chances. Its black and white cinematography is not to be discarded.
the wolf9-THE WOLF OF WALL STREET ★★★★½
Martin Scorsese (145 points/5 Oscar noms)
Scorsese took the learnings from his classic mafia movies to depict Wall Street’s financial excess in three energetic hours of sleaze, swearing and overall bad taste that have proven controversial and earned him Criticism of glamourizing the very issue it tries to condemn, which hasn’t stopped the master to score big again. Leo DiCaprio won the Globe and it’s also looking good for the Academy award.
Tom Hanks10-CAPTAIN PHILLIPS ★★★★
Paul Greengrass (136 points/7 Oscar noms)
Exhaustingly tense and gripping, this Somali pirates hijacking drama based on true events is the most accomplished US thriller in ages. Paul Greengrass refined his directorial trademark and provided Tom Hanks with his best role in years. Unfortunately both of them were snubbed by the Academy, but the film superior craft has been awesomely rewarded with 7 nominations including best picture.
Blue_Is_the_Warmest_Colour-00411-BLUE IS THE WARMEST COLOUR ★★★★★
Abdellatif Kechiche (124 points/1 Spirit nom)
French selection rules prevented the Palm D’Or winner to enter the Foreign Oscar race, but this exquisitely observed masterpiece championed by Spielberg and showing the sexual awakening and first love of a lesbian teen girl has been a fixture during the season. It has won the support of most critics groups for the film; its two young lead actresses and the Spirits still await.
A12-FROZEN ★★½
Chris Buck & Jennifer Lee (112 points/2 oscar noms)
Rapidly approaching social phenomenon status thanks to its smashing performance at the box office, despite proven divisive among critics, the latest Disney classic is the favourite to win in the two categories it has been nominated, best animated picture and original song with ‘Let It Go’.
the act of killing13-THE ACT OF KILLING ★★★★★
Joshua Oppenheimer & Anonymous & Christine Cynn (93 points/1 Oscar nom)
This unique documentary offered some of the paramilitary heads responsible for the massacre in Indonesia a chance to re-enact their war crimes; opportunity they happily embraced filming themselves as action blockbusters or sophisticated musicals stars in a process that led them to realize the consequences of their actions. It has been piling the awards and looks like the stronger contender also for the DGA and the Oscar.
the wind rises14-THE WIND RISES
Hayao Miyazaki (72 points/1 Oscar nom)
The farewell for the legendary Japanese creator of the Studio Ghibli is an aviation story set during the Second World War, that have raised some political controversy as well as an enormous critical support which establishes it as ‘Frozen’ biggest rival in the animation race. On limited released just to qualify for the Academy Awards, western audiences are still awaiting for the film to hit our screens.
_D3S1363.NEF15-PHILOMENA ★★★
Stephen Frears (70 points/4 Oscar noms)
Pleasant and tear-jerking human interest tale of elderly woman looking for his son, taken away from her by the nuns of the internship she was sent to when pregnant. It gave Judi Dench the perfect vehicle for a new claim at the Oscar and Steve Coogan a chance to get in the screenplay race. There were better movies this season, but few have pulled the audiences’ emotional strings as strongly.
Short-Term-12-00116-SHORT TERM 12 ★★★½
Destin Cretton (70 points/3 Spirit noms)
The greatest underdog of the season couldn’t take all the precursor’s support all the way to the Oscar, but Cretton has shaped one of the most solid indies of the year with this foster care home drama. Brie Larsen as well, as well as the rest of the young cast, has found her breakthrough role and it’s still a strong contender for the Spirits.
BEFORE MIDNIGHT17-BEFORE MIDNIGHT ★★★★
Richard Linklater (64 points/1 Oscar nom)
In the unexpected last instalment of this unique trilogy that’s lifted the romantic comedy genre to new heights, Delpy and Hawke recaptured the magic of their character’s relationship, now well established and with twin daughters of their own. Circumstances evolved, but their over analytical ways remained intact and like its earlier parts, the screenplay has been nominated again by the Academy.
S18-SAVING MR. BANKS ★★★½
John Lee Hancock (53 points/1 Oscar nom)
Emma Thompson was superb as the uptight writer of Mary Poppins in this story of the difficult relationship between her and Walt Disney, when trying to adapt her novel. The film, grazed with an old-fashioned charm that remembers the classic, saccharine-coated style trademark of the studio, was criticized for its sanitized version of the events; yet its British lead actress, alongside Tom Hanks are the two most surprising snubs of the year.
august-osage-county19-AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY ★★½
John Wells (51 points/2 Oscar nom)
This adaptation of the prestigious play was tepidly received by the critics, claiming the fitting of the original story into just two hours made it miss the rich connections between its many characters. A tale of dysfunctional family’s reunion for a funeral, it boasted perhaps the most impressive cast of the year and brought Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts another honour for their bulky CVs.
Stories We Tell, Sundance Film Festival 201320-STORIES WE TELL ★★★★½
Sarah Polley (49 points/1 DGA nom)
Another shocking snub in what many thought it was a lock for this year’s documentary gong, the former child actress turned director explored her family’s past to unveil a shocking secret hidden behind a curtain of rumours and half-truths in her best work to date. She may still have a chance to score with the Director’s Guild.
the great gatsby21-THE GREAT GATSBY ★★★
Baz Luhrmann (49 points/2 Oscar noms)
Dropping from last year Oscar race and placed as the Cannes opener instead, Luhrmann’s folly shone at its most baroque in this energetic adaptation of the literary classic, where as its custom with the Aussie filmmaker every single detail of its production design was taken care in breath-taking detail. Its stylized costumes nearly prompted a Belle époque renaissance in the high street last spring.
THE HUNT22-THE HUNT ★★★★
Thomas Vinterberg (48 points/1 Oscar nom)
Dogma alumnus Vinterberg returned to form and provided Mads Mikkelsen with a breakthrough, Cannes winner role as the kindergarten assistant falsely accused of child abuse becoming the victim of a witch hunt. Last year it piled on European awards and now is up for the foreign language spirit and also a favourite for the Oscar.
fruitvale23-FRUITVALE STATION ★★★½
Ryan Coogler (47 points/3 Spirit noms)
This Sundance winner drama narrating the accidental killing of a young black man by the police exploring the life of the victim while throwing in the issue of racial hatred surrounding the case has put in the map the careers of director and lead actor Michael B. Jordan, both collecting most available accolades for newcomers. Oscar winner Octavia Spence is also up for a supporting actress spirit.
Twenty_Feet_From_Stardom-00124-TWENTY FEET FROM STARDOM ★★★★½ (43 points/1 Oscar nom)
Morgan Neville
A joyous tribute to the role of female back-up singer in pop history that’s singing all the way to the Oscar; Neville’s superb assemble of performance footage seems initially shaped as an anthology of early girl bands to later focus in four personal portraits of amazing talents that remained out of the spotlight and their unfulfilled dreams.
1370957073425-THE GREAT BEAUTY ★★★★★ (42 points/1 Oscar nom)
Paolo Sorrentino
Italy’s choice for the Oscar is indeed a work of beauty. Like an X-ray of Roma's decadent society, aggravated by comparison against the ancient city's cultural heritage, seen through the eyes of a writer who came in search of inspiration and got sucked in the city’s jet set lifestyle. A hit in the limited release box office and Fresh from winning the Globe, Sorrentino’s best work to date is also the frontrunner for the Academy award.
249327id7b_TheHobbit_TDOS_Group_30sheet_1200.indd26-THE HOBBIT: THE DESOLATION OF SMAUG ★★★
Peter Jackson (36 points/3 Oscar nom)
Somehow amending the flaws of its predecessor, thus avoiding the same critical backlash claiming the change from two-parter to trilogy was a total overstretch, the second instalment of The Tolkien classic is still a favourite with global audiences and up again for honours for its unquestionably fine technical crafts.
2415_TP2F_00169R27-DESPICABLE ME 2 ★★★
Pierre Coffin & Chris Renaud (36 Points/2 Oscar noms)
The original one passed completely unnoticed by the Academy, but its global success prompted a sequel that’s become the highest grossing film of the year worldwide. This alone has made the minions a force hard to ignore in the Animation field this time, resulting not only in a best animated feature Academy nomination, but in its main song ‘Happy’ by Pharrell Williams, currently a global chart sensation being in too.
lone survivor28-LONE SURVIVOR
Peter Berg (33 points/2 Oscar Noms)
A recent smash in the box office based on the bestselling story of four Navy seals on a mission against Al-Qaeda that went wrong; any other time an effort like this would have been handsomely rewarded, yet it has only managed two technical nods, which also came as one of the surprises of the Academy’s nominations announcement, due to the strong competition it faced.
ALL_IS_LOST-00129-ALL IS LOST ★★★★
J.C. Chandor (32 points/1 Oscar nom)
Another of the most criticized Academy snubs has been Robert Redford’s return to form with this physical and nearly silent role of a man struggling for survival after a shipwreck in the deep ocean. Since it debuted at Cannes J.C. Chandor’s film has been widely seen as a surefire contender, but ended up with just a technical nomination. The Hollywood legend recently blamed lack of publicity and distributor’s suport as the reason for this underperformance.
LEE DANIELS' THE BUTLER30-THE BUTLER ★★★½
Lee Daniels (30 poins/3 SAG noms)
Daniels recruited half of Hollywood for this work freely inspired in the life of the White House’s longest serving butler, used here to showcase the evolution of the struggle for racial equality in the. Forest Whittaker; Oprah Winfrey and the whole cast scored nominations with the SAG, but were left empty handed at the gates of the Academy .
candelabra31-BEHIND THE CANDELABRA ★★★★½
Steven Soderbergh (29 points/5 BAFTA & 1 DGA noms)
Soderbergh’s hard to believe retirement may have just meant he’s working for TV instead, as this “swan song” was made for HBO, having a theatrical release everywhere else. A master class on how to make a biopic, by focusing on the relationship between camp pianist extraordinaire Liberace and his longest lasting lover, he gave Michael Douglas and Matt Damon the roles of their lives, for which they’ve won every TV award in the States.
blackfish32-BLACKFISH ★★★½ (29 points/1 ACE nom)
Gabriela Cowperthwaite
This shocking study on the intelligence of whales and the effects captivity has in their behaviour was a hit at Sundance and everywhere it got released. It brilliantly built up the case against their commerce and exploitation in water parks. With a record 151 documentaries eligible for the Oscar, ‘Blackfish’ didn’t finally got chosen by the Academy, but it has been one of the most awarded during the season.
I33-MUD ★★★½
Jeff Nichols (29 points/2 Spirit noms)
Matthew McConaughey amply confirmed his career’s quality shift with three movies that have granted him recognition aplenty: he’s the Oscar frontrunner for ‘Dallas Buyers Club’ ; also had an impressive small role in ‘The Wolf Of Wall Street’, plus this Mississippi-based coming of age drama was one of the biggest box-office indie hits of 2013. Didn’t make the Oscars selections but its director is up for the Spirit, where next to the cast he’ll be the recipient of the Robert Altman award.
_EST3045.NEF34-ENOUGH SAID ★★★½
Nicole Holofcener (28 points/2 Spirit Noms)
The US indie filmmaker’s fifth feature is a superior rom com about the difficulties that age brings to dating, told through two towering performances by TV favourite comedian Julia Louis Dreyfuss and the late James Gandolfini, whose onscreen chemistry is the film’s main attractive. The Academy didn’t go for a posthumous nomination to the Sopranos star. But Spirit wins for him and Holofcener’s screenplay are still a strong possibility.
spring breakers35-SPRING BREAKERS ★★★½
Harmony Korine (27 points/1 Spirit nom)
Although James Franco’s campaign for supporting actor didn’t get much traction, Korine’s divisive shocker featured high in many critics lists. A rites of passage account of a group of teenage girls on holiday; its graphic depiction of the hedonistic world of drug, alcohol and sex abuse they get thrown into made it an easy source of controversy. Its dazzling cinematography is up for a Spirit.
gm_4296_lg36-THE GRANDMASTER ★★★½
Wong Kar-Wai (26points/2 Oscar noms)
The Hong Kong master surprised his followers by taking its exquisite predilection for visual detail to the world of martial arts. Faithful to his style and embroiled in oriental philosophy, this slow-paced Kung-Fu master saga is narratively challenging, but boasts another prodigious display of dazzling cinematography. It may have missed the Foreign Language nod, but both its breath taking cinematography and custom design have been nominated.
The Croods ?? 2012 DreamWorks Animation LLC. All Rights Reserved37-THE CROODS ★★½
Kirk De Micco & Chris Sanders (26points/1 Oscar nom)
An unexpected global box-office smash; the misadventures of this prehistoric family struck a chord with global audiences and got handsomely rewarded for it with a nomination in most of the precursors, as well as the Oscar itself over rivals such as Monsters University, in an animated field that’s been particularly weak this year.
The Spectacular Now, 2013 Sundance Film Festival38-THE SPECTACULAR NOW ★★★
James Ponsoldt (25 points/2 Spirit noms)
Earnest, moving and familiar story about the pains of adolescence boasted by a superior screenplay and fine performances by its two young leads; particularly good is The descendant’ Shailene Woodley who amply validates all the promise she showed in Payne’s Oscar nominated film. Another indie underdog in the race, though loved by the critics it didn’t break through the guilds. The spirits nominations for Woodley and the film’s screenplay are its last chances.
RUSH39-RUSH ★★★★
Ron Howard (24 points/4 BAFTA & 1 ACE noms)
Another one left empty handed by the Academy, the tale of legendary Formula 1 rivalry between James Hunt and Nicki Lauda boasted a furious pace and astonishing technical skill. Chris Hemsworth gave solid performance, but it’s Daniel Brühl who earned an SAG mention. Sound and production categories and a superb cinematography by Anthony Dod Mantle may find recognition in the BAFTAS.
prisoners40-PRISONERS ★★★
Denis Villeneuve (23 points/1 Oscar nom)
Genre movies are not always the Academy’s cup of tea and the moral controversy surrounding Hugh Jackman’s character taking justice by his hands haven’t helped this excellent children’s kidnap thriller that resonated big with audience and critics. Despite a cast that features six former nominees and one winner, it has just scored for the fantastically claustrophobic cinematography by long time overdue master Roger Deakins.
