A QUICK REVIEW OF SOME OF OUR LATEST FAVOURITE TRACKS:
It has to start with this tongue in cheek number, “Thou shalt always kill”, in which a rabbi looking rapper goes through a sort of ten commandments for the 21st century urbanite, rhymed over a loop of arcade videogame sounds. ScroobiUs Pip versus London producer Dan Le Sac are the hippest thing around. Watch out for the lyrics. They’re priceless.
On a completely different note, American Nicole Atkins is bringing back old-fashioned cabaret sounds to the spotlight, after making a name for herself supporting The National and Clap Your Hands Say Yeah live. Gifted with a remarkable voice, “The Way It Is” has got Modern standard written all over its tune and it heralds her forthcoming debut on Columbia “Neptune City”. More new names, Odawas, are about to release their second album “Raven and the White night”, preceded by the Ethereal “Alleluia”, which will grant them comparisons with My Morning Jacket and get them in the sack of the Neil Young inspired Americana. But “Alleluia” posesses an spiritual quality, unheard since the late Jeff Buckley.
And from near newcomers to long time favorites, Low, the Rober award multi-winner trio from Duluth have just released “Drums and Guns”, a return to their more sober register that will satisfy even the most purist of their followers, who weren’s that convinced by Dave Fridman lush production on former album. Fridman, still at the knobs, restrains his style to his most minimal, achieving another excellent work. “Breaker” has been chosen as its first single.
And last, but not least, Panda Bear is one of the frontrunners in the album of the year race, so far. About to release a new single, “Take Pills”. “Bros” is another good example of why “Person Pitch” is hailed as a psychedelic Masterpiece.
