Tratamos de elaborar nuestra lista abarcando todo lo posible, pero 150 albums y 200 canciones no son suficientes para contener toda la buena música que se ha producido en diez años, por lo que nos vimos forzados a realizar dolorosos descartes. Algunos de ellos (los punks experimentales japoneses Boredoms; el pionero del house minimal y dubstep Shackleton; el sublime proyecto de electrónica ambiental Gas o los mastros del drone Sunn o))) debido a la naturaleza experimental de su música que hacía difícil su valoración conforme a las reglas de los formatos tradicionales; algunos otros, aún habiendo dado el salto de grupos de culto indie a estrellas en sellos grandes con dignidad y aplomo (Modest Mouse; Death Cab For Cutie;..And You Hill Know Us By The Trail Of Death) fracasaron al exportar sus logros al otro lado del charco. We tried to make our list as comprehensive as possible, but 150 albums and 200 tracks are not enough to fit all the good music of ten years and we were forced to make some painful discards. Some of them (Japanese experimental punks Boredoms; minimal house and dubstep pioneer Shackleton; sublime ambient project Gas or dronemeisters Sunn o))), due to the experimental nature of their music making it difficult to conform to the rules of ordinary formats; some others having made the difficult transition from indie darlings to major label stars with dignity and aplomb (..And You Would Know Us By The Trail Of Death; Death Cab For Cutie; Modest Mouse), failed to export their achievements across the pond. Groundbreaking songwriters such as Okkervil River’s Will Sheff or Phil Elverum, the brain behind The Microphones and Mount Eeerie, missed their place too; so did Girl Talk’s illegal sound collages. Esta década no ha producido muchas estrellas de rock capaces de atraer a grandes audiencias. Al facilitar la disponibilidad de toda la música, el internet y el software P2P han vuelto del revés el modo en que las canciones se comercializan. Ahora todo el mundo tiene virtualmente el catalogo completo de todos los videos y grabaciones musicales al alcance de la mano, lo que hace que las radio formulas, video playlists y otros modos promocionales se hayan convertido en anacrónicos y los elegidos de las discográficas tengan menos oportunidades para conquistar al público. Este fracaso al reemplazar los viejos iconos, junto a una saludable escena de música en vivo ha contribuido a que artistas veteranos se mantuviesen sin mucho esfuerzo en su lugar privilegiado; incluso muchos ya retirados volvían para recrear sus viejos clásicos gracias a la enorme demanda, sin tener necesidad de pasar por el estudio de grabación de nuevo. Los retornos sorpresa de Kate Bush o Vashti Bunyan se encontraron entre aquellos que nos entregaron con éxito nuevas composiciones. Algunos favoritos de los Premios Rober comenzaban a dar preocupantes muestras de decaída creativa (R.E.M; Madonna; Morrissey); otros permanecían tan vitales e inamovibles como siempre (Tom Waits; Nick Cave). Pero el gran momento histórico lo protagonizó la publicación de “Smile”, el mejor disco perdido de todos los tiempos, que trajo consigo la milagrosa recuperación de Brian Wilson para el circuito del directo.

The noughties have failed to produce rock stars capable of pulling big audiences. By making music more available, the internet and P2P software have also turned upside down the way songs are mass-marketed. Now everyone has virtually the all-time catalogue of videos and recordings at the reach of his fingers, which made radio formulas, video playlists and other promotional ways felt somehow anachronical and the industry’s chosen ones to have fewer chances at conquering the public. This failing to replace the old icons, next to a healthy live scene, has made most veteran artist to happily remain in their privileged place; even many of the long time retired ones came back to recreate old classics live, thanks to an enormous demand, without the need to record new work. The surprise comebacks of Kate Bush or Vashti Bunyan were among those who successfully brought new songs. Some Rober Awards favorites gave worrying signs of progressive creative decay (R.E.M; Morrissey; Madonna); some others remained as vital and unshakeable as always (Tom Waits; Nick Cave). But the historic highlight was the final release of “Smile”, the greatest lost pop album of all time, which also recovered a fantastic Brian Wilson for the live arenas.

Electronica was one of the dominating trends during the nineties, but as soon as we entered the new millennium, due to the lack of new technology to make music that hadn’t been already explored; it was reduced to a niche in the market. Its massive crossover appeal continued, but most of the times repeating tried and tested formulas, rather than exploring new ways. The most interesting findings came from a few experimental musicians in the areas of minimal house, dubstep or post-ambient.

10-LOS SUPER SEVEN-La Sirena

La gran revolución popular en el mundo latinoamericano siguió siendo el reggaeton. El equivalente latino del hip-hop continuaba siendo causa de odio unánime entre mentes bienpensantes y clases medias, debido a la vulgaridad de sus letras y simplicidad de sus ritmos. Sin embargo, no faltaron aquellos que se dieron cuenta del potencial de sus conexiónes con el folk y el Caribe, llevando el género a niveles superiores con Tego Calderón como máximo exponente. La resaca del Buena Vista Social Club aumentó el Interés por Cuba. Los portorriqueños Calle 13 conseguían afianzar el rap latino y el populismo de Manu Chao derribaba fronteras. En los últimos años, una nueva cumbia ligada al electro y otras modas punteras en los clubs despertaba el interés de artistas tan innovadores como DJ/Rupture. Su proceso de puesta al día no ha hecho más que empezar.
