REVIEW 2008: GIGS OF THE YEAR

TOM WAITS-Glitter & Doom Tour (Paris)

No, we didn’t go to Paris to see Mr. Waits. Like many others, the capricious location demands and high prices of the living legend prevented us from catching him live. Instead, as a consolation prize we followed his Atlanta gig’s broadcast available at NPR music. However, it perfectly exemplifies the main characteristic of the year in live music: the growing demand for veteran artists greatly prevailed against a new batch of bands who do not seem capable to connect with large audiences.
Tom Waits was joined by Leonard Cohen, Neil Young and the long awaited returns of My Bloody Valentine and Portishead gathering five star reviews and managing to amaze, despite their longevity, critics and public alike.
The excessive growth of festival circuit began to produce its first victims, whereas Coachella had to resort to a last minute call to Prince in order to tackle poor ticket sales and Glastonbury, for the first time in history, didn’t sell out. Only the most specialized events seemed immune to the fall: Primavera in Barcelona had its biggest year and ATP successfully expanded to New York and Australia.
After the jump, our favorite gigs of the year, illustrated by rather amateur photos in glorious blurryvision, courtesy of the limited number of pixels in our first generation mobiles; in some cases we also found audiovisual material available.

REVIEW 2008: TOP 100 SINGLES (100-76)

101-RICARDO VILLALOBOS-Enfants

Our favourite tracks of 2008 also suffered from the overall quality clash, even when the new digital format threaten with turning the traditional album into a thing from the past, favouring the track as the ultimate choice. Even so, the highlighted singles pale in comparison with other years’ offer, showing a noticeable growth in the presence of guilty pleasures that wouldn’t have classified in better times; hardest sounds were also on the rise.
Not everything was negative, though. The EP, as a way of compromising between the track and the album, seemed to be the chosen format among new acts that wanted to launch themselves with something more substantial than a mere catchy tune; the quality and number of them made us raise our hopes for a better 2010.

REVIEW 2008: HONORARY MENTIONS – 21 BLOG DARLINGS

THE SHORTWAVE SET-No Social

Collectively nicknamed as Blog Rock, during this decade a big number of new artists discovered by the increasing presence of music blogs online, have grown to be a parallel world coexisting with the big-buck marketing of the four majors oligopoly, being a true engine for the industry’s renewal. Their influence was felt and in some cases intercepted, with some high profile ones closing down and some others watching their contents and ethos being modified. The remaining ones still fulfilled their gatekeeping role with clockwork precision and the following names were among their luckiest findings.

REVIEW 2008: HONORARY MENTIONS – 10 NEAR RETURNS TO FORM

LAMBCHOP-Slipped Dissolved And Loosed

“Their best record for a decade” (sometimes stretched up to two) was one of the most repeated mottos by musical reviewers this year, showing the huge number of veteran glories, mostly from the nineties and the eighties, that polished their decaying careers once again, pushed in many cases by the live circuit’s good health and growing demand for established names. None of the following Academy’s heroes from the past gave their best shot in 2008, but at least they generated welcome signs of creative recovery.

HARVEY MILK-A Maelstrom Of Bad Decisions

Hard sounds kept their unstoppable comeback. Since Mastodon performed first aid to the genre, metal and all its variations have been gathering new followers. Meanwhile, garage rock’s classic tradition, carried its global expansion like dynamite exploding from the American indie label In The Red ; and punks, next to other guitar distortion specialists, claimed their original strength reinstalled, after years of sponsored debilitation into the mainstream.

REVIEW 2008: HONORARY MENTIONS – 10 ELECTRONICA & DANCE

MICHNA-Triple Chrome Dipper

There was not much joy in the electronica world during 2008, a year of consolidation of the emerging styles from former seasons. Dubstep reined supreme, next to DFA’s productions and flirts with Balearic house among trendsetters; whereas electro and all its derivatives dominated the dance floors.

HUSH ARBORS-Live@Rough Trade Shops

On a year dominated by the vulgar and conventional, a special attention is deserved by those few brave ones still taking the risk to explore the farthest limits of sound. The following Quixotic musical adventures didn’t go unnoticed.
