PORTISHEAD-Machine Gun
We may be stretching our sinphonola special a bit too much, in order to make it fit in the meaning of the tradition, now it’s the turn of “Something blue”. As the obvious would be reviewing blues-induced music and there are not that many things that catch our attention coming from that genre at the moment, will have instead an overlook to the dark, the drone and the melancholic. Starting by Portishead “Third”album. Dark and melancholic, with a touch of krautrock, is already being hailed as a masterpiece. New single “Machine gun” and other tracks like “The Rip” can be found online.
In the more introverted corners of electronica we found High Places, who have just compiled all the EP’s released since 1997 and the return of The Notwist
BORIS-Statement
Our favorite Japanese noise experimentalists, Boris, are back with “Smile”, perhaps their most accessible work to date, without losing their habitual drone. They have even released a single, “Statement”, finding the band in not so habitual high spirits.
More Japanese melancholy can be found in the fine lo-fi pop harmonies of Tenniscoats, who have been criminally ignored until now. Their 2007 album “Totemo Amasho” is finally getting a growing of buzz.
BEACH HOUSE-Heart Of Chambers
And somehow blues induced too, the lazy psychedelia and Mazzy Starr-like vocals of Beach House. The Baltimore duo released a few weeks ago their sophomore effort “Devotion” with notorious critical acclaim.
Psychedelia and melancholy can also be heard as defining elements in the sound of Fleet Foxes, a post- My Morning Jacket americana band from Washington, currently enjoying all the blogosphere’s attention with their “Sun Giant EP”.
