The Week In News (17-02-2010): Berlinale; Primavera; ATP New York; Prince; The Knack…
Although winter is still causing havoc, the festival season is getting closer and some of the big players are wrapping up their bills. The biggest news of the week came from Barcelona, where the Primavera Sound festival has announced the last batch of artists completing a superb line up for its tenth anniversary. To the already confirmed headliners Pavement; Pixies; Wilco and Orbital, the organizers have added eighties electro-pop favorites The Pet Shop Boys; Gary Numan and Marc Almond; current British sensations Florence + The Machine and The XX; Low and The Charlatans will perform their respective classic albums “The Great Destroyer” and “Some Friendly”. All of it balanced with the best new music around: Beach House; Surfer Blood; Sleigh Bells; The Drums; Owen Pallett, etc. have also been added. More details are available at the festival’s website.
Meanwhile, ATP – which also curates one of the stages at Primavera – has announced that Jim Jarmusch will be choosing the artists to perform in one the days of the festival’s New York branch. The independent filmmaker is no stranger to pop music. Many rock and hip-hop artists have featured on his movies. Among his first confirmed choices: the live return of Wu-Tang member Chief Raekwon.
The obituary of the week is for The Knack’s singer Doug Fieger, who died from cancer at the age of 57. He will always be remembered for the all-time favourite “My Sharona.” More sad news of a completely different kind, Google’s war on blogs has been quite pro-active, taking a number of notorious victims during the past weeks. In what looks rather like another pathetic industry attempt to control freedom in new media.
Some internet archeology led to some precious findings in the shape of some amazing homemade videos of Prince & The Revolution’s rehearsals for their 1984 tour. We also discovered the clues for an unsolved mistery, a viral video named iamamiwhoami that’s supposed to hint at a high profile new release from a well known female artist. Cristina Aguilera? Amy Winehouse? Goldfrapp?
In the nostalgia department, the Dirty Projectors have announced they will perform their 2005 album “The Getty Address” live; in the meantime, a recent gig got them together with Beyoncé’s sister Solange, who made an impressive cover of the band’s single “Stillness is the move”. Meanwhile, The Bird & The Bee, the quirky pop-duo signed by Blue Note, has given details of a new album full of Hall & Oates covers.
Nick Cave & Bad Seeds herald a second batch of remasters, including those for “Tender Prey” and “The Good Son”. The cavernous singer, next to Rober award nominee actor Andy Serkis, is also involved on a motion capture of Bertol Bretch anti-capitalist opus “Threepenny Opera”; and last, but not least, Cave is one of the guests in Shane McGowan’s charity cover of “I put the spell on you”, whose proceeds will be destined to Haiti. Johnny Depp and other rock icons are also meant to feature.
Movie wise, The Berlin Film Festival has been monopolizing the headlines, with the returns of Scorsese and his adaptation of Dennis Lehane’s novel “Shutter Island” and Polanski with “The Ghost Writer”; plus films by Yimou; Vinterberg and Chlodenko enjoying a warm reception. Follow the daily reviews here.
The mind-blowing imagination of Spike Jonze has produced a new fruit, a 30 min short film called “I’m here” whose trailer has just seen the light of day. In the notorious soundtracks wagon, James Murphy will provide the music for the next Noah Baumbach opus “Greenberg”. As he did with Jack Black, the director is giving Ben Stiller a chance to shine in a complete different register, away from his usual comic roles. We hope the results are better than the ones achieved with Black. In the Meantime, Murphy’s longtime music partner Tim Goldsworthy has announced his departure from their co-created DFA label.
Our weekly date with free stuff was on hiatus last week, but one more time we’ve found plenty of free material worthy of your time, including this new single by promising indie-pop band from Berkeley, California, The Morning Benders; a first taster from forthcoming second album “Echo Sky” that is been offered as a free download. German electronica masters To Rococo Rot are back and they are also giving away the track “Working against time” from their new album “Speculation”.
More returns with single giveaway. Archie Bronson’s Outfit launch “Coconut” – their third album after a four-year gap – with “Shark’s teeth”.
In the mixtapes department, Ngunzunguzu offered their 80-looking “Moments In Love”, named after the Art of Noise track of the same title. Autechre is the latest act to join Fact magazine series of “Fact mixes” and British drone master Forest Swords has done the same for the highly regarded blog Gorilla Vs. Bear.
The Week That Was (24-01-2010): Haiti Relief; Kate McGarrigle R.I.P.; Billy Bragg; Joanna Newsom; Panda Bear
Posted by rober in News, The Week That Was on January 26th, 2010
An incredibly busy week packed with terrible news, great records and movie frenzy. But it was the tragic earthquake in Haiti, shocking the world and getting the headlines, what has served as a catalyst for the creative community as a whole. Artists big and small, from all corners of the music and entertainment spectrum, got involved in all sorts of activities to raise money and help in the relief of the catastrophe’s devastating effects. From Arcade Fire asking their fans to donate and international governments to cancel the country’s debt to Radiohead playing a special fundraising show or Will.I.Am remixing The Who’s “My Generation” with Slash. Here’s a few other notable initiatives:

The Pixies Confirmed for Primavera Sound
Few days after confirming Pavement’s long awaited reunion tour as the first artist on its bill, the organization of Primavera Sound has scored another huge goal with by announcing that Pixies will also be headliners, bringing to the popular Spanish city their acclaimed “Doolittle” tour, in which the band celebrates the 20th anniversary of the classic album by performing it in full with some B-sides added to the set.

2009 MUSIC A-Z: B for Belle & Sebastian vs. Beirut
BEIRUT-La Llorona
It looks like the B of 2009 is going to be quite disputed, with two of our favourite chamber pop bands returning. The first of them, Beirut, is meant to release a new album in the autumn, but before that there’s a new record compiling two EPs that showcase Zach Condon’s two different musical directions: His usual, gypsy-flavoured, itinerant orchestra has carried on travelling the world, moving from turn of the century Paris to the Latin American latitudes of Oaxaca, Mexico in “March Of The Zapotec”; back to back with a return to the laptop electronica of his origins, under the moniker of Realpeople, in “Holland EP” .
The second, Glasgow Finest, Belle & Sebastian, will be following the steps of many of their heroes from the sixties and fulfilling another of their pop dreams with the release of their first musical movie, for which they have been auditioning in search of two new female vocalists. “God Help The Girl’s” soundtrack, scheduled to see the light by the end of the year, will include brand new versions of popular classics next to a whole lot of new tracks and could become one of the year’s most pleasant highlights.

Rober Winners At Obama’s Inauguration
ARETHA FRANKLYN-My Country Tis Of Thee
Although the political attitude of many of the Rober Academy members’ ranks from mild apathy to full cynicism, we cannot help but sharing the joy and illusion of the USA while celebrating the most important historical moment the nation has lived for a few generations: The arrival of America’s first black president and his symbolic values of equality, freedom and hope for all; much needed in this troubled time.
To wish him all the best on his role as what it used to be called “the leader of the free world” pop stars of all backgrounds were playing in multiple shows and parties across Washington and the rest of the States yesterday. From the Queen Of Soul, Aretha Franklyn, who sang the patriotic anthem “My Country Tis Of Thee” at the Inauguration to Arcade Fire. Everyone who’s anyone in the pop world, except maybe for, errm, Daddy Yankee…were somehow involved on the celebration. Here’s a few of the most notorious moments Read the rest of this entry »
Listen to the new Red Hot compilation curated by The National

Until its release on February 17th, The Red Hot Organisation – an international charity dedicated to raising funds and awareness for HIV and AIDS, founded on the premise that even without a cure, AIDS remains a preventable disease and music is a great vehicle to raise money and awareness for it – will be streaming one new song a day from their latest project Dark Was The Night; curated by Aaron and Bryce Dessner of The National, who have gathered together an impressive group of artists and a total of 32 exclusive tracks recorded for the compilation. It will be available as a double cd/triple vinyl/download. You can listen to the tracks here.
This is the 20th year of Red Hot, and this is the 20th release, since their first iconic and Rober award winner “Red Hot + Blue” in which artists such as Neneh Cherry, David Byrne, kd Lang, Les Negresses Vertes, Neville brothers and many others covered Cole Porter’s standards hoping to help the audience gaining awareness about the disease and its prevention.
The tracklist goes as follows: Read the rest of this entry »
Bon Iver streams his new EP in full
BON IVER-Blue Tulip (Okkervil River cover)
After his retirement to a cabin in the woods turned to be one of pop music’s most creatively succesful retreats for ages, being currently celebrated in best-of charts and awards around the globe; Justin Vernon returns to civilization with his first release after “For Emma, Forever Ago”. Bon Iver’s new four track EP, “Blue Blood” carries on his trademark style, but somehow trying to adapt to a more social environment. Vernon even toys with the popular software autotune in one of the songs. The full EP can be streamed on myspace.

Recently two major events stood up among the hundred of gigs taking place every week in London: First of them, this year’s edition of The Ether festival, dedicated to music combined with multiple art disciplines, particularly technology and visuals.
