2009 MUSIC A-Z: E for Eternal Summers

Eternal Summers “Able To” from Indianface on Vimeo.

The rise of pedal distortion- led pop-rock, from the garage revival of the Vivian Girls to the fuzz and rawness of Times New Viking, is currently one of the creative fronts in popular music. And the E of 2009 is likely to add some more wood to this fire with brand new names such an Eternal Summers. In the jaunty and tuneful side of indie rock, this boy-girl duo’s debut EP is quickly earning them a great deal of devotion around the blogosphere.

Other recent source of hipness is the influence of Afrobeat in today’s US leftfield bands and in 2009 will keep on expanding. One of its most visible examples, Extra Golden , the band that’s made of the merging between Kenyan Benga music and American rock their USP, got a new album “Thank You Very Quickly.” Read the rest of this entry »

2009 MUSIC A-Z: D for Dr. Dre

DR. DRE FEAT. T.I. & NAS-Topless

The D of 2008 already belongs to hip-hop thanks to one of the most awaited comebacks of the decade. In fact is over ten years now since Dr. Dre released his last studio album. This long hiatus by one of the most influential figures of the genre has only served to fuel all sorts of speculations. Delayed again from its 2008 planned Christmas release, it is already being joked at as rap’s very own “Chinese Democracy”. You tube and the interned are currently plagued with videos and clips of songs allegedly included in the album, none of them particularly remarkable, but so far there’s no official confirmation of its tracklist. “Detox” will certainly be one of the most scrutinized albums of the year, and the arrival of Dre’s protégée Eminem new studio album benefiting from some of his Midas production touches, will help boosting the expectations. 2009 MUSIC A-Z: A for Animal Collective

ANIMAL COLLECTIVE-My Girls

After our contribution to the Awards Season is on track, we begin 2009 having a look at the crystal ball to see what can be expected in the music world through the next twelve months. The last year didn’t leave a good vibe in our ears, so we hope this one will make a better impression. The first month has already generated enough good releases, promising news and album tasters to believe so. We are tidying it all alphabetically, so we can condensate everything in a few posts.

The A of 2009 already belongs to Baltimore’s favourite experimentalists Animal Collective, whom have reached a fine balance between avant-garde antics and more mainstream appeal with their eighth studio album “Merriweather Post Pavillion”, and have started collecting the fruits by breaking into the Top 20 in charts around the globe, being unanimously hailed as the strong contender for album of the year. “My girls” with its underlying house beats is the album’s first classic (a mash-up with Frankie Knuckles classic “My love” can be found online, as well as many other promotional goodies, including a full stream of their recent gig in NYC, etc.)

But there are other A artists that may attempt to challenge the Animals’ supremacy Read the rest of this entry »

It will be available as a double cd/triple vinyl/download. You can listen to the tracks here.

This is the 20th year of Red Hot, and this is the 20th release, since their first iconic and Rober award winner “Red Hot + Blue” in which artists such as Neneh Cherry, David Byrne, kd Lang, Les Negresses Vertes, Neville brothers and many others covered Cole Porter’s standards hoping to help the audience gaining awareness about the disease and its prevention.

The tracklist goes as follows: Read the rest of this entry »

REVIEW 2008: HONORARY MENTIONS – 21 BLOG DARLINGS

THE SHORTWAVE SET-No Social

Collectively nicknamed as Blog Rock, during this decade a big number of new artists discovered by the increasing presence of music blogs online, have grown to be a parallel world coexisting with the big-buck marketing of the four majors oligopoly, being a true engine for the industry’s renewal. Their influence was felt and in some cases intercepted, with some high profile ones closing down and some others watching their contents and ethos being modified. The remaining ones still fulfilled their gatekeeping role with clockwork precision and the following names were among their luckiest findings.

Read the rest of this entry »

REVIEW 2008: HONORARY MENTIONS – 10 NEAR RETURNS TO FORM

LAMBCHOP-Slipped Dissolved And Loosed

“Their best record for a decade” (sometimes stretched up to two) was one of the most repeated mottos by musical reviewers this year, showing the huge number of veteran glories, mostly from the nineties and the eighties, that polished their decaying careers once again, pushed in many cases by the live circuit’s good health and growing demand for established names. None of the following Academy’s heroes from the past gave their best shot in 2008, but at least they generated welcome signs of creative recovery.

Read the rest of this entry »

REVIEW 2008: HONORARY MENTIONS – 10 NOISE MAKERS

HARVEY MILK-A Maelstrom Of Bad Decisions

Hard sounds kept their unstoppable comeback. Since Mastodon performed first aid to the genre, metal and all its variations have been gathering new followers. Meanwhile, garage rock’s classic tradition, carried its global expansion like dynamite exploding from the American indie label In The Red ; and punks, next to other guitar distortion specialists, claimed their original strength reinstalled, after years of sponsored debilitation into the mainstream.
