#BestOf2017 : Top 100 Tracks (100-76)

101-LUIS FONSI FEAT. DADDY YANKEE & JUSTIN BIEBER
Despacito (Remix)
(Def Jam)

As it is customary, we begin the countdown of our Top 100 favourite tracks of the year with the imaginary position 101, traditionally populated by one of its “guilty pleasures.” And in 2017, few deserved this slot more than the ubiquitous ‘Despacito.’ The fact that the combined forces of a Latin balladeer whose repertoire makes Enrique Iglesias look like Bob Dylan; a “growing pain” type of teen idol and the reggaeton star who invented ‘La Gasolina’ has been able to produce the most downloaded, streamed, listened to and successful track of the digital era is nothing short of miraculous. But resistance proved futile to a song that, apart from popularity and an impossibly catchy mellow Latin rhythm, has been a source of pride and relief from its long run on top of the Billboard charts for a US Hispanic community under threat by the racist policies of its notorious president.

In the first quarter of our Top 100, we’ll find Japanese Female Punks; long-awaited returns of alternative giants from the noughties; grime superstars; the grief-inspired songs of a French legend’s daughter; grunge inspired pop-rock and a Bedouine.

#BestOf2017 : Top 50 Albums

Every year they arrive earlier! The habitual recap of the best music of the year, due to the pressures of internet, has become a race against the clock to be the first on delivering it. November hasn’t finished yet and most of the UK’s most relevant lists are already out. To be fair, 2017 has made it quite easy for this to happen. The latest high profile (scheduled) release came last Friday with Björk‘s divisive ‘Utopia.’ December increasingly looks like the realm of seasonal compilations and little else. So, unless the latest works by Neil Young or Miguel -unlikely- dazzle the critics; Migos‘ recently announced second volume of their acclaimed ‘Culture’ reaches the heights of their first one or -even more unlikely- someone else –Kanye?– tries to pull a Beyoncé to cash on the lucrative sales of the week before Christmas, 2017 is ready to be wrapped up.

David Bowie, Leonard Cohen & Prince Lead the #RoberAwards2016 Winners’ List

The year 2016 in music was amply defined by those who have left us. Predictably, our readers have paid with their votes a posthumous tribute to such iconic figures as David Bowie, Leonard Cohen and Prince, whose recordings dominate the Rober Awards 2016 winners’ list.

Bowie’s Blackstar has swept the board, dominating in the six categories he was nominated for. His masterful swan song, a poignant and powerful artistic statement reflecting upon his sickness and own mortality, has deservedly won the accolades for album, song, best male artist of the year, etc. Meanwhile, Leonard Cohen was recognized as songwriter of the year, becoming the runner-up for best song and male artist. The early work with 94 East by Minneappolis’ purple royal reigned in the reissue of the year category.

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds scooped the band of the year honour with Radiohead closely behind. Dorset’s finest PJ Harvey won in the best female and live artist of the year categories. The all-conquering return of A Tribe Called Quest earned them a couple of throphies, namely Best Hip-Hop act and comeback of the year. Frank Ocean won for best R&B artist. Biggest snub of the year sadly went to Beyoncé, who began as the favourite in the four categories she was up for, but surprisingly ended as runner-up in each one of them, prompting fears among the organisers of a potential #RobersSoWhite backlash.

Anohni‘s bold electronic metamorphosis was rewarded with the best pop artist trophy and US new band Whitney took the one for breakthrough artist. Promising Brits Goat Girl were chosen as Sound of 2017. Groundbreaking Swedish songwriter Jenny Hval took the cutting edge honour and the long awaited return of Aussies The Avalanches tied up with producer of the Year Kaytranada in the electronica category.

Some eclectic world flavours were added to the mix by Portuguese fado singer Ana Moura and J-Pop girl band BabyMetal. Kendrick Lamar, Sia and Portishead completed the list of winners.
