When pop artists make movies…

…they are normally victims of their own ego mania or some ill advice and their project ends up being a stinker. For every “Purple rain” (and arguably that was only successful, not that good) there are many “Spiceworlds”. Latest painful example was Outkast’s western musical “Idlewild”.

That’s why we are a bit shocked to find out that long time disappeared Trip-hop icon Tricky is back with a bunch of projects, including his debut as a movie director, “Brown Punk”. The film shares its title with Tricky and former Island records honcho Chris Blackwell’s joint new label, where they are comitted to promote new talent from a diverse range of styles and backgrounds.

Other nineties dance stars who also exploring their celluloid dreams are the influential electronic French duo Daft Punk. Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Cristo always showed very cinematic qualities: their robotic image could have been taken out of a comic book. They had already soundtracked anime project “Interstella 5555”, but this is a full feature lenght movie in which our favourite robot couple try to search a way to become human, facing rejection from their cybernetic community. “Electroma” is about to be released in the UK and most reviews consider it a more than decent effort. At least, in this case, we don’t have to cope with anybody intensive acting lessons, showcasing their Meryl Streep complexes.

Sinphonola: She’s An Alien From Outta Space…

janelle-monae.png

This month’s sinphonola opens with what could easily become the revelation of the year: Janelle Monae’s career to date included some early roles in musicals like “The Wizard Of Oz”, until Outkast’s Big Boi provided the young star with her first break as a guest vocalist in some of the tracks of the duo’s “Idlewild” soundtrack. The tepid reception to that album may have come in Janelle’s way to superstardom, but this could be just about to change with the release of her debut ” Metropolis Suite I: The Chase”, in which the Nona Hendryx lookalike adopts the role of alien cybergirl Cindi Mayweather’s, narrating her misadventures to save mankind, in a world where love is prosecuted. Her first single “Violet Stars Happy Hunting” is without doubt one of the most infectious and unique tracks we have heard this year. If all the album is like that Janelle will be seen at this year’s Rober Awards.

CUBA: DE LA REVOLUCION AL REGGAETON

Cuba 080

Last Saturday Polly performed at Bridgewater Hall in Manchester, as part of the city’s international festival.
